At the age of 17, Emily-Marie Anderson is already making an impact as an aspiring fashion photographer. Her captivating imagery and inspired style has earned her international plaudits from student photography competitions, heralding her arrival as an incredibly talented fashion photographer. Speaking of photography she says, ‘I love seeing the outcome of the shoots and can relish in the freedom I have with being able to photograph anything in any way and making it my own.’ Read her interview below to find out more about her talents and her unique perspective on her craft.
What do you like the most about fashion photography?
There’s not an expectancy to conform. It transcends from the ordinary and possesses the power to make people stop and just think ‘Wow…what is going on here?’
Congratulations on winning the Miami Fashion Week Student Fashion Photography Award! How did your win come about and how did it feel to win the award?
Thank you so much! I had actually just come back home from London after meeting with a photographer about an internship and so to have this email notifying me of my success was the icing on the cake- I was wholly taken aback! I’d applied only a few days before the closing date and never really considered the prospect of winning, I simply reveled in knowing I was working towards getting my work out there and engaging with such opportunities. The process was prompt and it was only a few weeks later when I found out I had won; My winning photos have been put on their website, a small selection of my work was exhibited at Miami Fashion Week and the mounted prints they used were then sent over to me with a Tiffany’s glass plate award & a transfer of $250.
Have you already had the prize winning shoot or when are you going to have it?
I had the opportunity to have a professional mentored shoot with an established Miami based fashion photographer but financially I was bound because I couldn’t afford the travel costs…it was unfortunate but they’ve kindly retained this opportunity for me if I do end up going there in the future and the money I received is going towards a lighting kit I am going to purchase.
What do you especially like to convey through your photography?
I want my subjects to appear caught up in an almost transcendent experience, like an untouchable and slightly crazed realm. I like my photography to have an emotive quality of which its viewers can latch onto. Beauty & fashion most definitely induce this but I want to try and avoid my work ever looking too fabricated.
Where do you look for inspiration?
I don’t explicitly look for inspiration but often browse fashion networking sites and absorb what is around me- whether it’s images, culture or even emotions. I usually seek inspiration in accordance with the concepts and specific desires I have in mind at the time and as far as photographers go I love Gavin O ‘Neil, Jamie Nelson, Iconogenic, David Lachapelle and the work of a not so well known photographer Brain Demint.
Having achieved so much so early, what’s next for you?
I know what I’d love to be doing and that is establishing myself as a ‘Professional Photographer’ specializing within the fields of fashion, editorial, beauty & portraiture and my approach to the industry involves a lot of self-marketing, networking and of course shooting my heart out experimenting with different things and trying to learn the art form. I’m very lucky and have an internship this summer with fashion & celebrity photographer John Wright which I’m both very excited & nervous about. After the internship and another year of college I have plans to move to London to assist full time before being at stage whereby I can take on my own small clients with the right skill set to perform.
